Turmeric

Turmeric (Curcuma longa Zingiberaceae)

Other Names: Indian Saffron, Turmeric Root

Turmeric, a tropical perennial grown in Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean, has pointed, lanceolate leaves up to 70 cm long and low inflorescences. Its cylindrical, yellow-orange rhizome, often with finger-like growths, has a sharp, slightly spicy taste and is widely used as a spice and food coloring.

Parts for Use

Rhizome

  1. Harvested in winter when dormant, cut, boiled, and dried.
  2. Used primarily for powders, tinctures, and occasionally infusions.

Ingredients

Contains curcuminoids, which provide color and anti-inflammatory effects, and essential oils that stimulate bile secretion.

Use in Treatment

Turmeric rhizome treats indigestion, poor appetite, excess stomach acid, liver, and gallbladder issues, with protective liver effects and bile stimulation. Its curcuminoids offer potent anti-inflammatory benefits, supporting traditional use for rheumatism, arthritis, eczema, asthma, and psoriasis. Turmeric’s antibacterial and antioxidant properties may lower cholesterol, prevent blood clots, and support circulation, potentially reducing heart attack risk. It may also aid in circulatory and menstrual disorders.

Cultivation

Grow from seeds in fall or rhizome cuttings in early summer, in moist, well-drained soil. Requires temperatures above 15°C, ample sunlight, and high humidity, making greenhouse cultivation ideal in temperate climates.

Preparation and Dosage

For Internal Use (Indigestion, Inflammation)

  1. Infusion: Steep 1 g rhizome powder in a cup of boiling water for 5–10 minutes, strain, drink 2–4 cups daily.
  2. Tincture (1:5 in 70% alcohol): Add 20 drops to a glass of water, take after each meal.

Warnings

  1. Consult a healthcare professional before use.
  2. Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  3. Do not use for gallbladder issues due to potential bile duct obstruction.
  4. Avoid with blood-thinning medications.
  5. Excessive use may cause stomach irritation or nausea.
