Galega

Galega (Galega officinalis Fabaceae)

Other Names: Goat's-Rue, French Lilac, Italian Fitch, Professor-Weed

Galega, a shrubby perennial, grows wild in southern Europe and parts of Asia, reaching up to 1.5 meters. Its leaves, when rubbed, emit a goat-like odor, and it features six to eight bright green leaves with blue, pink, or white butterfly-shaped flowers in summer. Ripe seed pods open abruptly, scattering seeds.

Parts for Use

Flowers

  1. Flowers are picked in full bloom between July and September.
  2. Dried flowers are used in infusions, powders, and tinctures.

Ingredients

Galega contains the alkaloid galegine and its derivatives throughout the plant. It also includes chromium, flavonoids, and tannins that aid blood clotting.

Use in Treatment

Galega may support type 2 diabetes management due to its chromium content, which enhances glucose absorption. Animal studies show galegine lowers blood sugar, though diabetics should continue prescribed medications. Galegine may reduce thirst, suggesting potential for weight control. Galega aids indigestion and chronic constipation, acts as a diuretic to reduce fluid retention, and promotes sweating. Its antibacterial properties, confirmed by a 2001 Indian study, and anti-inflammatory flavonoids make it useful for fever treatment.

Cultivation

Galega is grown from seeds sown in fall in deep, moist, well-drained soil in a sunny or slightly shady location.

Preparation and Dosage

For Internal Use (Diabetes, Constipation, Indigestion, Fever)

  1. Infusion: Use as prescribed by a healthcare professional, typically 1-2 grams of dried flowers in 200 ml of boiling water, steep for 10 minutes, and take as directed.
  2. Tincture: Use as prescribed, typically 10-20 drops in water, taken 1-2 times daily.

Important Note: Preparations containing galega should only be used under medical supervision due to potential toxicity in larger amounts.

Warnings

  1. Consult a healthcare professional before use.
  2. Do not use galega preparations during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  3. Avoid combining galega with other medications without medical advice.
  4. Do not exceed prescribed doses to avoid dangerous blood sugar reduction.
