Cola

Cola (Cola nitida Sterculiaceae)

Other Names: Cola Nuts, Kola Nuts

Native to West Africa, the cola tree is cultivated in tropical climates. Species like *Cola nitida* and *Cola acuminata* are used. Its fruit consists of five star-shaped seed pods, each containing 5–6 large seeds known as cola nuts. When dried, the seeds harden and turn reddish inside, with a smooth, dark mahogany-brown outer surface.

Parts for Use

Seeds (Cola Nuts)

  1. Immature seeds are harvested, and the outer layer is removed.
  2. Seeds are used as powder or extract in capsules, granules, massage gels, or drinking solutions.
  3. In regions where cola trees grow, the caffeine-rich seeds are chewed as a stimulant.

Ingredients

Cola seeds contain up to 2.5% caffeine, along with theophylline and tannins.

Use in Treatment

Cola nuts, primarily due to their caffeine content, promote alertness and mental acuity, making them useful for combating exhaustion, particularly during recovery from illness. Caffeine mildly increases blood pressure, dilates heart blood vessels, and boosts heart rate and respiration. It also acts as a diuretic and may aid in dissolving tissue lipids. However, the effects of cola seeds differ from pure caffeine due to their interaction with tannins. Theophylline in cola seeds supports respiratory rhythm and may help treat diarrhea. Over time, the body may develop tolerance, requiring larger doses for the same effect. Use for diarrhea should be supervised by a healthcare professional.

Cultivation

Cola trees thrive in sunny or partially shaded areas with rich, well-drained soil in tropical climates.
