Goldenseal

Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis Ranunculaceae)

Other Names: Canadian Barberry, Orangeroot, Yellow Puccoon

Goldenseal, native to North America and used by the Cherokee Indians, belongs to the Ranunculaceae family but resembles a miniature raspberry. Its dark yellow, thickened underground stem (rhizome) spreads horizontally with many thin roots.

Parts for Use

Rhizome

  1. Rhizomes are harvested in the fall from plants at least three years old.
  2. They are cut into smaller pieces and dried.
  3. Dried rhizomes are ground into powder for capsules or liquid extracts, often used as tinctures, sometimes combined with herbs like witch hazel (Hamamelis).

Ingredients

The primary active ingredients are alkaloids, particularly hydrastine, which constricts blood vessels and raises blood pressure, and berberine, which has antibacterial properties and stimulates the immune system.

Use in Treatment

Goldenseal has been traditionally used to stop bleeding, including between menstrual cycles, and supports circulation, making it effective for hemorrhoids, varicose veins, and leg swelling. It can be combined with vein-strengthening herbs like witch hazel. Goldenseal is also used for catarrh, eczema, and eye and ear infections. A 1999 American study found it increases immunoglobulin production, supporting immune system health. A 2001 study confirmed berberine’s antibacterial action, and Chinese research suggests it may restore normal heart rhythm, indicating potential for treating arrhythmias.

Cultivation

Goldenseal is challenging to grow, requiring well-drained, humus-rich soil in shaded, wooded areas.
