Plantain (Plantago major i Plantago lanceolata Plantaginaceae)
Other Names: Great Plantain, Broadleaf Plantain, Male Buckthorn; Ribwort Plantain, Narrowleaf Plantain, Ribleaf, Female Buckthorn
Plantain, found across Europe on embankments and uncultivated land, includes two key species. Plantago major forms flattened rosettes of broad leaves, often disrupting manicured lawns. Plantago lanceolata has lanceolate, erect leaves. Both bear tiny flowers in cylindrical or ovate inflorescences.
Parts for Use
Leaves
- Leaves are harvested from June to September, ideally before blooming, and dried.
- Used in sedatives, primarily for external applications, as well as infusions, liquid extracts, and capsules.
Ingredients
Both species contain aucubin (an iridoid), flavonoids with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and soothing mucus that reduces inflammation.
Use in Treatment
Plantain has been a staple in folk medicine for external issues like itching, cracked skin, cuts, insect bites, and eye inflammation, often applied as lotions or potions. Internally, its mild expectorant and mucus-soothing properties make it effective for coughs, mild bronchitis, asthma, pharyngitis, laryngitis, and allergic respiratory issues. A 1982 Bulgarian study confirmed its efficacy in chronic bronchitis, and a 1983 study showed it relaxes airways. Spanish research in 2000 highlighted aucubin’s anti-inflammatory effects, while Norwegian (2000) and Swedish studies suggest plantain’s polysaccharide extracts combat lung infections and streptococcal infections.
Cultivation
Plantain grows aggressively in sunny or slightly shaded, untidy garden areas.
