Blackhaw

Blackhaw (Viburnum prunifolium Caprifoliaceae)

Other Names: Black Haw, Blackhaw Viburnum, Sweet Haw, Stag Bush

Blackhaw, a low tree native to the central and southern United States, grows up to five meters tall in large forests and on dry, rocky slopes. Its bent trunk supports branches with hairy twigs, which are bright red when young and turn green with age. The leaves are oval and sharply pointed, and white flowers produce blue-black fruits.

Parts for Use

Trunk and Root Bark

  1. Trunk and branch bark is collected in spring and summer.
  2. Bark, approximately one millimeter thick, is used to prepare infusions, extracts, and tinctures.
  3. Root bark is harvested in autumn.

Ingredients

The bark contains bioflavonoids that strengthen capillary walls, as well as triterpenes and organic acids with antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects. It also includes tannins and coumarin scopoletin, which has a relaxing effect on the uterus.

Use in Treatment

Blackhaw bark is known for its ability to relieve uterine cramps, making it effective for treating menstrual pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, colic, and other abdominal cramps. Its anticoagulant and sedative properties aid in managing these conditions. Blackhaw also has anti-inflammatory and anticoagulant effects, which may help treat ulcers. It is prescribed internally for conditions involving fragile capillaries, such as subcutaneous bruising, venous disorders, and hemorrhoids. Research is ongoing into blackhaw’s potential role in managing cardiovascular conditions, particularly high blood pressure.

Cultivation

Blackhaw thrives in moist soil in sunny or partially shaded locations.
