Natural Remedies - Healing with Medicinal Herbs

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy, the use of essential oils for healing, is a modern branch of ancient natural healing practices. It is believed to have originated around 4,000 years ago, likely in China. For Chinese herbalists, these concentrated aromatic substances were of special significance, as their properties strengthened both the body and the soul.

More and more people are discovering the beneficial and pleasant effects of essential oils every day. These are potent extracts with strong stimulating properties, meaning therapeutic benefits can be achieved with very small doses. It’s important not to assume that a larger dose is always better.

When applied externally, the skin absorbs essential oils, which enter the bloodstream and are selectively absorbed by specific organs—for example, thyme benefits the intestines, while rosemary and tarragon support the gallbladder. The best application method is adding oils to a bath, or applying a few drops to the feet or wrists and gently massaging, repeating as needed multiple times a day. For larger-area body massages, mix five drops of essential oil into a carrier massage oil.

Essential oils can also reach the respiratory system through inhalation. For inhalation, place a few drops of oil on a tissue and breathe in, or add them to hot water and inhale the steam with a towel over your head. Alternatively, you can inhale the scent directly from the bottle. For vaporization, add a few drops of oil to water to diffuse the aroma throughout the room. Eucalyptus or peppermint oils are particularly suitable for this method.

For internal use, the dosage of essential oils should be adjusted to the condition. For headaches, two drops may suffice, while for infections, two drops taken five times a day are recommended. Due to their bitter taste, it’s advisable to mix oils with a spoonful of honey. They can also be added to tea as a supplement.

Essential oils generally have no contraindications, but if you have kidney issues, you should use them under medical supervision.
